NBA guard Terry Rozier’s Thursday took a dramatic turn when FBI agents arrested the Miami Heat star on allegations of taking part in an underground sports betting and poker ring.
The arrest followed a month-long investigation that had previously appeared to clear Rozier of wrongdoing.
Federal prosecutors say Rozier is among several people caught up in a wide-ranging gambling probe. US Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr is expected to reveal more during a press conference later today in New York, joined by top officials from the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and the NYPD.
The investigation reportedly began after the NBA detected unusual betting patterns during a Heat game earlier this year. Rozier had exited that matchup just ten minutes in with a foot injury shortly before someone placed a flurry of bets, worth over $10,000, predicting he would fall below his expected stats.
Authorities say at least six sportsbooks flagged similar suspicious wagers on Rozier that same day. The case now threatens to shake both Rozier’s career and the NBA’s ongoing effort to protect the integrity of its games.
