
Today (October 24) marks the beginning of Diwali, a five-day festival of lights in Hindu culture.
The festival of lights signifies peace and joy, the victory of good over evil, and light over darkness every day.
The celebration comes from India and came to the Caribbean during indentureship. During the period people fast and clean their homes, cook and prepare to welcome their god, Mother Lakshmi, to bring happiness and prosperity into their homes and their lives.

Historically, Diwali can be traced back to ancient India more than 2,500 years ago. Various legends are associated with the origin of Diwali but most are about the triumph of good over evil.
The most popular tale associated with Diwali is the return of Lord Ram following his 14 years of exile and after defeating the demon king Ravana. In joyous celebration of this victory with lanterns being lit to welcome him back home.

The celebratory period also coincides with Diwali practitioner Rishi Sunak becoming British prime minister.
