“It Will Be Long, But Not Forever” is the title of a riveting book by Fionia Salmon, of a young woman’s struggle to secure custody of her son after he was taken away from her.
Born and bred in Swaby’s Hope Spur Tree, Manchester her memoir unveils her story as a young Mum pursuing University education without proper support and how her struggles intensified when her son was taken away from her.
“Poverty and abuse tried to break my spirit but they only made me stronger, teaching me to survive, and strive for a better life with God’s sustaining grace.” the overcomer marveled.
Motivation to Write
Salmon says she was motivated and inspired to write her memoir due to several factors, chief of which was her son and the many challenges she faced with him.
“Without him I navigated life as a single mother. I wanted to leave a legacy that would inspire not only him but generations to follow,” she said.
“As I journeyed through the writing process memories kept creeping back and flooding my mind. It took me back to a place where I had to fight or flight but the fight in me persevered then and now. It was not an easy journey, I would not have done it without faith, a strong determination and people who were placed at different times through my path that only God would have done.”
Favourite Book Excerpt
“My favorite chapter of the book is my letter to my son- Chapter 10. My son will always hold this dearly as I seek to bridge the gap of years of separation and guilt of not been there.” says Salmon.

To My Dearest Son, Adiel:
From the first day I laid eyes on you, I knew you were going to have the same fighting and enduring spirit I have. Growing up, I had to fight, and when you came along, I fought even harder because your very existence totally transformed my life. Every battle I fought in life was for you, to give you a far better life than I’d had.
My heart scattered when the justice system labelled me as unfit because I was not in a traditional household and took custody of you away from me. I stood speechless in that courtroom as I helplessly witnessed my motherhood snatched away from me by lies. You were too little to understand.
As much as I had to fight to do so, I did not stop showing up for you, whether directly or indirectly. It saddened me to know that things were being said or done to threaten our relationship, and many nights I cried myself to sleep because I was missing you.
Yes, the sweet day has finally come. I know at times I might overstep or overcompensate because I was not present as you grew up, but I am so happy we were able to embrace the new chapters of our lives. I want you to know that I will forever be your cheerleader, just like your aunt, my sister Ann (God rest her soul), was for me.
I applaud you for holding strong even in those moments when you felt abandoned by me, and I will continue to be consistent, open, and ready to answer any questions you have.
I promise to always love and adore you, even when you resist my PD affection, (smile), as we look ahead and continue to learn and navigate our relationship. As your aunt said, “It will be long but not forever.”
Thank you for opening your heart and receiving me with such care. I love you, Adiel
Your Loving Mom.
