The Jamaican Constabulary Force (JCF) says the section of Spanish Town Road between Six Miles and Weymouth Drive in St Andrew that was temporarily closed due to a fire has been reopened.

The fire, which took place earlier this morning in Riverton City in St Andrew, had earlier led to the closure of the busy roadway, causing significant disruption to traffic flow and other activities in the area. The cause of the fire was not revealed, but Our Today understands that it resulted after old tyres that were being stored in front of a business establishment caught fire.

The impact of the road closure was evident by the early morning traffic snarl along the Mandela Highway.

This was due to the traffic diversions, with motorists being directed to Weymouth Drive from the east and to Washington Boulevard from the west.

The police say the measures were put in place to ensure the safety of residents and commuters while the fire was being brought under control.
