With the Independence Weekend upon us, there are several fun activities that families and friends can partake as they relax and unwind in celebration of Jamaica’s 61st independence.

As Jamaica approaches its 61st birthday, this is a time to reflect on the progress made as a country over the years, while basking in the rich cultural heritage and unique cultural attributes that have made Jamaica so unique.

Jamaica has made significant strides, achieving several milestones over the years that are worth celebrating and Our Today has a list of events for families and friends to attend this Independence Weekend.

Reel and Come Again (Film Night in the Village)

Today, August 4, the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports will be hosting Reel and Come Again (Film Night in the Village) at the National Stadium, starting at 8. p.m.

This is a great Friday evening family event for film lovers to partake in the film night village to learn more about Jamaica’s rich culture. Persons can visit the culture ministry’s social media page for additional details on the event.

Ocho Rios Seafood Festival

If you are a seafood lover, then the place to be on Sunday, August 6, is at White River Park in Ocho Rios, St Ann, for the annual Ocho Rios Seafood Festival.

This year promises to be the best yet, where patrons will be treated to good food, good vibes and most importantly, good music. This is a great event to bond with family and friends while enjoying delicious seafood. Please see the flyer above for additional details.

Independence Festival and Drone Show

Another Independence celebratory activity that will be staged by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport is the Independence Festival and Drone Show in Ocho Rios, St Ann, on Monday, August 7.

This will be a special event also for kids to witness the display of hovering drones to form national symbols and Jamaica’s cultural icons.

Grand Gala

The annual Independence Grand Gala is the main highlight of Jamaica’s birthday celebration. This year, the Grand Gala will be held at the National Stadium starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Grand Gala celebration includes performances, drone displays, awards, and among other activities. Persons can visit the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport social media page for additional details on the event.

Denbigh Agricultural Food Show

The Denbigh Agricultural, Industrial and Food Show is set to take place between Saturday, August 5, to Monday, August 7. This is the largest agricultural show in Jamaica, which includes a mixture of shopping, entertainment, food, livestock and competitions.

On the first day of the event, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Floyd Green will give an official tour and make a public address. There will also be a Farm Queen competition at 2 p.m.

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen will lead the tour of the grounds on the second day. The governor general will also make a public address at 2 p.m. The day will end with the Hi-Pro Gospel Extravaganza Show.

On Monday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness is expected to give an official tour of the grounds and make a public address. The day will end with the Denbigh Reggae Fest.
