For its 15th staging, Guinness Sounds of Greatness (GSOG) zoomed its focus on the next generation of sound clash DJs in its pursuit to preserve the dancehall culture. After a fierce competition, which saw multiple DJs battle it out for the coveted title of Nex Gen Champion, it was ultimately Kingston-based Jugglin’ Masters who walked away with bragging rights, J$1.5 million in cash and prizes and the title of GSOG Nex Champion.

The dynamic two-man duo, consisting of DJ Insaneo and DJ JJ Deadlock, are the first-ever winners of the coveted ‘Nex Gen’ title, and we got the opportunity to speak with the newly crowned champions about their victory.
- Why did you decide to enter the Guinness Sounds of Greatness? We initially were afraid to enter the competition despite the fact that we were always fans of the event. However, we got over the fear due to the encouragement we received from our good friend and current GSOG Nex Gen ambassador, Fabian ‘Fyahman’ Morris. This was not something that was new to us, as we have entered clash competitions on a smaller scale during our time at University. We decided we were not going to leave without winning.
- Where did you get your start in music? We have both been in music for some time now. As we got older, we decided to hone our skills and place our focus on music rather than seeing it as a hobby or something that could generate income on the side. Persons started to see our potential, and we have had the amazing opportunity to play at parties such as Heineken’s Zimi Seh Brunch, Dragon-sponsored Ova Suh, Soca Nawmal and much more.
- How do you feel about being the first ever to win the title of GSOG Nex Gen Champion? The experience was amazing. We came in with a plan, and wi seh wi nah lef until wi win. So, right now we feel amazing. Tears came a mi eye fi see myself as a youth a guh through to the finals. And now, it feels great to win, especially knowing that this is the first time that Guinness zoomed its focus on the next generation in this way. I charge Guinness to continue this, especially with the younger generation of DJs. Many of us are out there with talent, but no way to showcase it. What they did this year to bring in a new generation of DJs, I really appreciate that.
- What was the preparation like for the Guinness Sounds of Greatness competition? We were preparing for a long time. There were multiple sleepless nights. We sacrificed free time, meals, and multiple trips during rainy and sunny times to ensure that we were properly equipped with all dubs. Despite how difficult it was, we would do it all over again.
- What advice would you give anyone looking to pursue a career as a DJ? We would advise them to know your craft, music, and crowd. It is important to be teachable, you will not know everything. Finally, we would advise them to be resilient. A lot of people quit when they face difficulties. There will be a lot of difficulties while building your career in this industry. Just hold your head up and stay strong. It will work out in the end.
