The world is now being challenged to play its part in taking better care of the earth, as currently, its soil is facing extinction.
As the world continues to grapple with the alarming effects of climate change, a number of celebrities have lent their voices to the recent #SaveSoilMovement, in an effort to spread awareness and help curb the issue.
Do you know ways to save the soil?
As we commemorate the recently concluded Environmental Week 2022, (June 1 through to June 8), let us take a look at five easy ways you can play your part in saving the soil.
1. Afforestation

Afforestation refers to the planting of trees or protection of areas under trees. This exercise has been known to be a good method for conserving soil.
Protecting areas under the tree can be done by planting foliage that encourages healthy soil and water absorption.
2. Grow soil-saving plants

Planting legumes, clover and tress is an effective way to preserve the soil. These soil-saving plants tend to pull nitrogen from the air and help increase the fertility of the soil.
Clovers attract beneficial insects and fix nitrogen and carbon which contributes to greenhouse gases that affect climate change.
Legumes are deeply rooted crops that can draw nutrients buried deep in the soil to be used by other plants. Like the clover, legumes are carbon and nitrogen fixing.
Trees with their deep roots are able to reuse nutrients, improve drainage water quality and enhance the structure of the soil.
3. Composting

Organic matter is an essential ingredient for healthy soil as it helps to hold nutrients and water. Organic matter usually comes from animals and humans.
One way to build organic matter is by adding compost which will provide the soil with a diversity of nutrients and microorganisms.
4. Crop Rotation

This very popular technique has been used for years. Never underestimate the power of the way you plant your crops. Planting and growing a variety of crops in the same soil helps to conserve it.
Doing this will stop overgrowth of pathogens and a lack of fertility in the soil.
5. Fewer concrete structures

To function properly, the soil needs an adequate amount of water to function. Concrete surfaces especially in residential areas, make it difficult to water the soil.
