A flash flood watch has been issued by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica (Met Service) for low-lying and flood-prone areas in eastern parishes, including St Mary, Portland, St Thomas, Kingston and St Andrew, and St Catherine.

The watch will remain in effect until Wednesday at 5 p.m.

According to the Met Service, the flash flood watch is in response to a Broad Trough that is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms across the island until Friday. Additionally, gusty winds are expected to affect the island beginning Thursday.

“Due to persistent rainfall across eastern parishes and St Catherine over the past few days, and the likely soil saturation, any additional rainfall could result in flash flood and possible landslides,” the Met Service wrote in a release.

Jamaicans are urged to take precautionary measures and be ready for quick action if flooding occurs, or if a warning is issued. The Met Service also encourages citizens to keep informed through its daily updates.
