Flow Jamaica is reporting that over 97 per cent of its fixed and mobile customer base remained connected during the 5.6-magnitude earthquake yesterday, October 30.

The company stated that while its mobile network experienced some congestion in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, this was not unusual given the nature of the disaster and the urgency of persons calling to check on their loved ones, as well as the heavy use of data to share videos and images. The traffic has since normalised. On the fixed network, less than 3.0 per cent of the company’s customer base experienced a disruption in service, primarily due to loss of commercial power at some of its facilities.

The telecoms provider shared that several of its sites are currently running on generator or battery power but others, particularly those impacted by theft and vandalism, were down until commercial power is restored. Flow said its technical operations team is in contact with the Jamaica Power Service Company (JPS) to ensure full restoration of services once commercial power is re-established.

Flow also noted that while it had suffered some subsea fibre breaks off-island due to the earthquake, the redundant routes have adequate capacity to manage the traffic into and out of the island. The telecoms provider said it is in communication with its customers affected by these subsea fibre breaks and is keeping them updated on the restoration of service.

“Where other outages were reported, those are being investigated for expeditious resolution,” Flow said.

In the meantime, Flow stated that its retail store network as well as contact centres remain operational with no damage reported at any of its locations.
