Dancehall artiste Esco

Wondering why you haven’t been hearing much from dancehall artiste Esco of late? Well, truth is, he’s been booked and busy.

Since rising to fame as one part of the dancehall duo Leftside and Esco in 2006, the Tuck In Yuh Belly deejay has made it very clear that he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

A music man through and through, over the years Esco, born Matthew Thompson, has spent time perfecting his craft and setting himself apart from other recording artistes by venturing into music production, songwriting, entrepreneurship and, most recently, acting.

A man who does it all, Our Today caught up with Esco to find out what he’s been up to since his debut on the entertainment scene.

“I would like the readers to be on the lookout for different kinds of players in our genre. Different kinds of talents in our genre, different kinds of moguls. I feel like I would like the audience to realize that there are lots of different prolific people in the business, not just the ones you see constantly on the frontline.”

Esco, dancehall practitioner

“I’ve been blessed, I’ve been fortunate,” he began.

“Still on the entertainment scene and involved in music in more facets than before. I’ve been spending time working on my craft and adding to my repertoire. I’ve added songwriter, music producer, acting and also now I’m a store owner,” said Thompson.

When asked about his acting debut, the man of many talents stated, “I’m the character in an upcoming series called Broken.”

While he couldn’t say just yet where the new series would be premiering, or exactly what the series would be about, he did hint that having the series streamed on Netflix or other well-known streaming platforms was definitely a possibility.

As Thompson prepares to wow the world with his acting skills while continuing to “spread his wings”, he noted that the opportunity was just another of the many things he had to be grateful for today.

Though no longer much of a recording artiste himself, Thompson has found true love in the field of songwriting and music producing, which has allowed him to work alongside a few dancehall greats including Beenie Man and Bounty Killer.

No stranger to hard work, over the years he has made it his duty to put plans in place to earn from multiple streams of income, a goal that led him to start his own business.

GRATEFUL FOR POSITION HE’S IN

Now the proud owner of EC Makeup Bar located at Shop no. 23 in the New Kingston Business Centre, Thompson admits that though he isn’t where he thought he would’ve been years ago when he ventured into music, the position he now finds himself is one he is grateful to be in.

In closing, he stated: “I would like the readers to be on the lookout for different kinds of players in our genre. Different kinds of talents in our genre, different kinds of moguls. I feel like I would like the audience to realise that there are lots of different prolific people in the business, not just the ones you see constantly on the frontline.”

He added: “There’s lots of people who have deals, who write, who have businesses, who are stars too… people who can do everything but they choose to multitask as opposed to staying focused in one arena, and that’s Esco.”
