The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has initiated efforts to determine the identity of a man in Haiti who is believed to be a Jamaican.

The move comes more than a week after Our Today contacted senior representatives of the Andrew Holness Holness administration to determine if the Foreign Affairs Ministry was aware of the plight of the man, known as ‘Janel’ and who is believed to have been deported by the United States to the wrong country.

Last week, in response to queries, the ministry said it would look into the matter.

In an article published on January 22, Our Today highlighted how Jude Pierre Dambreville brought Janel’s plight to public attention in a viral Facebook post.

He said the man appeared in the Fonds-des-Nègres community sometime around December 12, 2020.

“My mom said he appeared two days after I returned to the US.”

Dambreville, speaking exclusively with Our Today, added that Janel was wandering for days in the community, sleeping on the streets before his mother, a retired nurse, offered him assistance.

“My mom said he appeared two days after I returned to the US,” Dambreville said.

In the viral Facebook post, Dambreville’s mother explained that no one could understand Janel and many in the Haitian community thought he was crazy.
