Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 after his car was struck by a train near Salzburg.
Police say the crash happened early in the morning at a level crossing. Emergency responders pulled Manninger from the wreckage and attempted to revive him, but he could not be saved. The train driver however, was not injured.
Manninger made 64 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, playing a key role during the club’s 1997–98 title winning season. He stepped in when David Seaman was injured, delivering standout performances, including a memorable win at Old Trafford. His form earned him Premier League Player of the Month in March 1998.
Over his career, Manninger also represented Austria 33 times and featured in the squad for Euro 2008. He played for several clubs across Europe, including Juventus and Udinese, and later had a short spell with Liverpool.
