A former England and Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape. 

The player, who represented England during the 2010s, was stopped by Border Force officers at Stansted Airport while trying to board a flight on Sunday.

He cannot be named for legal reasons and has been released on bail, with a court date set for late February 2026, as police continue their investigation.

The arrest relates to a non-recent allegation of attempted rape.
