The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has reached across the aisle to extend its sympathies over the death of former Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament Ernest Smith.

Smith, an attorney at law, represented the South West St Ann constituency in Gordon House and is survived by widow Lynette Royes-Smith, a son and four daughters including Marsha Smith, who is also an attorney-at-law and the member of parliament for North East St Ann.

“Having learnt of the passing of renowned attorney-at-law and former Member of Parliament for SW St Ann, Ernest Smith, the People’s National Party wishes to extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” the PNP said in a statement.

“Through his two professions, Mr Smith provided advocacy and representation for his constituents and clients for
many years.”

The 70-year-old Smith, the PNP said, was a dedicated member of the JLP and “is sure to be missed by all who knew him, worked with him and loved him”.

The party added: “His legacy, having entered the legal field as one of the youngest attorneys in the Caribbean, will not be forgotten. It will serve as a reminder to our youth to work hard and pursue their dreams.”

“I express heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, including our own state minister in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service and Member of Parliament for North East St Ann, Marsha Smith, and the rest of his family, as they mourn this tremendous loss.”

“Ernest Smith was a prominent lawyer, former member of the Jamaica Labour Party, and Member of Parliament for South West St Ann which he served for two consecutive terms between 2002 and 2011,” Holness said.
