The St Elizabeth police arrested four men for praedial larceny and recovered eight stolen goats on the Cameron Hill main road in the parish.
Police reports indicate that the goats were recovered yesterday by a team of officers who intercepted a Toyota Corolla. The vehicle was searched, and the goats were found in the trunk. The men could not account for the animals and were arrested.
The owner of the goats was later identified.
Acting Superintendent of Police Coleridge Minto said in a statement: “Praedial Larceny remains a priority in the parish and will continue to work to apprehend all perpetrators and bring praedial larceny under control in the St Elizabeth division.”
While addressing the issue earlier this year, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Mining Floyd Green estimated that farmers have suffered J$6 billion in losses over a 10-year period due to praedial larceny. He has since called for stronger legislation to deter the practice.
