Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ended her season with an impressive win in the 100m at the Gala del Castelli Meeting in Switzerland on Tuesday (September 14).

The 34-year-old star sprinter, who won a silver medal at the Olympics in August, sped to victory in 10.78 seconds with the Swiss pair of Majinga Kambundji (10.99s) and Ajla del Ponte (11.11s) in her wake.

It was a fitting end to a season in which Fraser-Pryce ran under-11s 13 times and under 10.80s seven times including a new lifetime best of 10.60s. She has now run under 10.8s a record 22 times in her illustrious career.

The time eclipsed Merlene Ottey’s meet record of 10.95 which had stood since 1996.

Posting on her Facebook page afterwards, Fraser-Pryce expressed her gratitude for what was another successful chapter of her medal-filled career.

“Represented the black, green and gold at a 4th consecutive Olympic appearance, taking home two medals. Resumed outdoor season with consistent sub-11 performances. Final outdoor race at today’s Gala dei Castelli produced a new meet record of 10.78s. So much gratitude for a demanding season that brought out the best in me. Thanks to my fellow female athletes for showing up as the best of who you are,” she said.

The ‘Pocket Rocket’ was not the only Jamaican to stand atop the podium in Switzerland as Olympic 800m finalist Natoya Goule produced a commanding display to win the 800m in 1:58.20.

The 30-year-old Goule was in control of the race from the gun and pulled away over the last 250m.

Chanelle Price of the United States was more than a second behind in 1:59.75 while Lovisa Lindh finished third in 1:59.94.

Christopher Taylor enjoyed another podium finish in his comeback season when he clocked 45.70 to finish third in the 400m won by Jochem Dobber of the Netherlands in 45.38 in a close battle with the USA’s Vernon Norwood, who had to settle for the runner-up spot in 45.31.

Fast-rising Brazilian 400m hurdler Alison Dos Santos, the Olympic bronze medalist, demonstrated his class in the event with an easy meet-record run of 48.15 for victory over Estonia’s Rasmus Magi, who clocked 48.53 for second place.

Third went to Emil Agyekum in 49.15. A tired-looking Jaheel Hyde finished fifth in 49.73.
