Prime Minister Andrew Holness, once praised for his social media savvy, witty comebacks and general tech-friendly engagement, is being dragged by the Jamaican Twitterati as the local coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak triggers anxiety and panic.

Twitter users, who have spent the past few days watching Jamaica’s caseload (and by extension active infections) skyrocket, were quick to notice how eerily silent Holness’ social media pages have been.

The Honourable BroGad—his unofficial moniker since October 2019, which caught on for months leading up to the 2020 general election, boosting his public profile and the popularity of the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP)—has now been stripped and left only with a patois derivative of his birth name, ‘Anju’, on Twitter.

At least to Jamaican Twitter users, Holness’ approval ratings are plummeting faster than the foreign exchange rate; watching virtually all the nation’s Caribbean neighbours begin their vaccination drives, citizens are feeling a heightened sense of FOMO (fear of missing out) and wondering where the country could be headed as the spike in cases continues.

Calling on the prime minister to lead, thousands of tweets have sent ‘Anju’ flying into the number one trending topic since last night, and well into Thursday evening (February 25)—and Twitter refuses to ease up.

Twitter mode? SAVAGE

“Lol Anju dem present hard pon social media before election. And now the silence loud like market ppl,” @tinmilk6 wrote.

@simply_tariq, marvelling at the ‘fall’ of Holness, tweeted, “The transition from Honourable Brogad to Anju is actual comedy”.

“Anju put Jamaica pon autopilot and pop a couple sleeping pills LMAOOOOOO,” @dwl_jamaica added.

There were others who defended Holness, arguing the rise in COVID-19 infections speaks more to the indisclipline of the country than his leadership.

Jamaican Twitter timeline forecast: ‘Polarising with a 100% chance of drama!’

“Me nuh waa see Anju Holness. Me alright. Me see enough of him last year when him did a warn the whole a unnuh seh if you do not abide by the protocols we will reach a breaking point. Well see we yah. The point bruk. And unnuh still nah hear,” @ChampionPrezzi argued.

An overwhelming majority, however, chided Holness for ‘leaving Jamaica on autopilot’.
