People’s National Party (PNP) councillor-candidate for the Kintyre Division, Vivienne Brown-Bond, is urging the Ministry of Local Government to address garbage collection issues in parts of the East Rural St Andrew constituency.

In a statement on Wednesday (May 25), Brown-Bond bemoaned the unsightly build-up of solid waste on the road leading to Two Pass in Halls Delight.

She slammed the garbage pile-up as a national health hazard and appealed to Minister Desmond McKenzie to ensure the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) collects same at regular intervals.

“The residents of Halls Delight and surrounding communities have had to endure unsanitary conditions of uncollected garbage for several months at a time. The garbage truck does not come to this area unless there is public alarm or outcry from the residents for the garbage to be collected”, Brown-Bond argued.

She argued that the NSWMA has a duty to collect garbage in a timely manner as the site has become a dumping ground for passers-by and residents from neighbouring communities who have no other means of disposing of their garbage.

The untimely and improper disposal of garbage in the area poses a great risk to the health and safety of the citizens, especially children who are more prone to air and water borne diseases.

Brown-Bond contended that residents have taken matters into their own hands and are burning their garbage due to it not being collected by the NSWMA.

The opposition councillor-candidate is therefore calling on the minister and the management of NSWMA to urgently intervene to have garbage collected regularly.

She is also recommending that the appointed NSWMA Monitors police the area to identify vehicles and trucks which are illegally dumping garbage at the site.
