The ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party scrapped to victory in Wednesday’s (January 18) general election, meaning Prime Minister Gaston Browne will today be sworn in to continue as leader of the Caribbean twin-islands’ government.
Today will also be treated as a national holiday.
The Labour Party took just nine of the 17 seats available in Parliament, the minimum required to secure a majority, while the main opposition United Progressive Party secured six seats and the Barbuda People’s Movement won one seat.
Independent candidate Asot Michael won the St Peter seat.
The election results come amid a reportedly low voter turnout among the almost 61,000 persons eligible to vote.
