Coco Gauff’s Australian Open journey came to a rough halt on Tuesday, and the disappointment boiled over once she left the court.
After a one-sided quarterfinal loss, the usually composed American let her frustration spill out, taking it out on her racquet moments after exiting Rod Laver Arena.
Gauff was outplayed by Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, who raced to a 6-1, 6-2 victory and never allowed the match to settle into a rhythm. The defeat was swift and decisive, and while fans inside the stadium missed the aftermath, a photographer caught the brief outburst that followed behind the scenes.
It was an uncharacteristic scene for the 20-year-old star, who sits at No. 3 in the world and already owns two Grand Slam singles titles, the 2023 US Open and the 2025 French Open. Even with the early exit, Gauff’s track record suggests this setback will be just another chapter, not the story.
Svitolina, meanwhile, moves on to a semifinal clash against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
