The appointment of Dennis Chung as general secretary of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) would be a good move, and he would breathe new life into what is a moribund football organisation lurching from one calamity to the next.
Dennis is experienced as a senior executive. He is a trained chartered accountant and is well acquainted with financing and money management.
But let’s set that aside for now. He has an understanding of what it takes to be a good manager and get the various components of a team functioning.
The positions he has held throughout his career at JMMB, The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, Supreme Ventures, GK Capital, National Solid Waste Management Authority and Petrojam now stand him in good stead and should enliven his credentials.
He loves the game and his country and will place the JFF on a progressive path. It’s hard to imagine the JFF beset by its operational problems and a widening skism with the players under Dennis Chung’s tenure.
Dennis is intuitive and very intelligent. He reads situations well and is sanguine. I must confess here that he is my friend, so there.
Earlier this year, I called for Christopher Williams to take the reins, asserting Chris brings a lot to the table and his verve and management would get the JFF out of the hole it has dug for itself.
Chris will be focusing on the investment house Proven which he heads. To Dennis falls the opportunity and I think he will be given the good will of the organisation, the players and the public.
There are many who share my sentiment on Dennis but, should he decide to take on the role, he must be treated accordingly.
The JFF should not repeat the mistakes it made with Dalton Wint. Pay him a reasonable salary befitting the position and do so on a timely basis as agreed. You can’t say “soon come” and I will pay you the remainder of your salary next year.
That’s a sign that your operation is a Mickey Mouse one.
Facilitate and equip Dennis to do the job. Knowing Dennis, he will be looking for certain assurances and won’t place himself in a position where he is likely to be seen with egg on his face.
The players will like him as their new ultimate boss and he has the ability to bring both the local and international players together, while seeing to it that the administrative set up runs like a well-oiled machine.
He has always been an advocate for governance measures and he will institute them as he sees fit, into a bereft JFF.
Dennis already serves as the chairman of the JFF’s finance committee so he has some clear knowledge of just what is in the coffers and what is required to put the JFF on a better trajectory.
Right now, the JFF is seen as an organisation run by a bunch of Benny Hills. Dennis will sort that out.
Dennis will be no menace.
With the appointment of Heimir Hallgrimsson as the Reggae Boyz head coach and the likelihood of Dennis Chung coming on as gen sec, this signifies a new page for the JFF. Prospects look good and something should be done to ensure that remains the case.
