Defending champions Glenmuir High and Jamaica College (JC) advanced to the final of the all-island Inter-secondary Schools’ Sports Aassociation (ISSA) Champions Cup with contrasting wins and set the stage for a tantalising grand finale.
In the curtain-raiser at the National Stadium in St Andrew on Wednesday, Clarendon-based Glenmuir trounced Ocho Rios High of St Ann 5-1, In the match following, JC of St Andrew edged St Catherine’s Hydel High 1-0.
Glenmuir and JC will meet in the final on Saturday, November 30, with the former hunting their second lien. JC is going for a record third title, having won in 2014 and 2022.
Ocho Rios, like they have been doing all season, surprised everyone by taking a 22nd-minute lead courtesy of Kaneil Brown. But Glenmuir were not to be denied and after Orel Miller pulled them level in minute 40, the writing was on the wall.
Additional goals by Dunsting Cohen (42), Ronaldo Campbell (64), Orane Watson (69) and super sub Nyron Allen (71) completed the comprehensive turnaround for Glenmuir,
Meanwhile in the second game, the ‘True Blue’ boys from Old Hope Road defeated a stubborn Hydel High 1-0 courtesy of a Jabarie Howell’s strike in the 44th minute.
Glenmuir and JC are arguably the best in the island and the stage is set for a mouth-watering contest come Saturday inside the National Stadium starting at 5:00 pm.
This matchup also pits two of the island’s most promising coaches in Andrew Peart of Glenmuir and Daveon Ferguson of JC. In fact, Ferguson was the one who replaced Peart after he was sacked by JC in 2019.
Both have coached youth football at the National level with Peart currently a Jamaica Football Federation coaching instructor.
