All of Jamaica was awaiting the sentencing in the Donna-Lee Donaldson case and the fate of Constable Noel Maitland.

Maitland, the disgraced former cop, was on Friday (March 13) sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 24-year-old social media influencer Donna Lee Donaldson.

The sentencing, handed down by Justice Leighton Pusey, came after Maitland’s conviction in the Home Circuit Court.

Donna-Lee Donaldson was Noel Maitland’s girlfriend. Her body has been missing since July 2022.

This case again highlights the prevalence of violence against women in Jamaica, particularly domestic abuse.

It was stipulated that Maitland must serve a minimum 32-year, four-month sentence to be eligible for parole.

After the sentencing, Donna Lee-Donaldson’s mother, Sophia Lugg, speaking outside the courthouse said she was satisfied with the sentence handed down, but she expected Maitland to confess to what happened to her daughter.

Maitland’s lawyer, Christopher Townsend, said that this was a battle in a war and that a fresh pair of eyes would be needed to look at the case when it goes to appeal.
