The GoFundMe campaign launched for Remo Douglas, the British man who drowned trying to save his partner’s niece has reached its target, with £6,100 donated to cover funeral expenses.

The 34-year-old man, who was from Easton in Bristol, UK, was at a river in Clarendon on December 16, 2022 when the incident occurred.

Reports are that he and his family were swimming in the river when a surge began following heavy rain. He successfully rescued his partner and child who had difficulties while swimming. Then, he attempted to save his partner’s 11-year-old niece, but the two drowned.

After his death, his mother Euthyln Douglas had expressed that she wished for her son to be honoured for his bravery. She then said that the family needed help to ensure that he was given a proper funeral and a GoFundMe campaign was launched.

Family overwhelmed by support

The campaign sought to raise £6,000 to cover funeral expenses and surpassed its target by £100. According to the family, the remainder would be donated to Douglas’ partner to help raise their child.

Douglas’ brother, Conate, told the UK’s BBC newspaper that his family was “overwhelmed by the support and the messages that we have received”.

He added that the donations will allow the family to give his brother the sendoff he deserves and they are thankful to everyone who contributed.

The family had shared that Douglas would be buried in a family plot in Jamaica, but a date has not yet been set said Contae.
