Opposition Leader Mark Golding is calling on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to follow through on his promise to implement term limit for heads of Government.
Golding, who was speaking at the People’s National Party (PNP) presentation of candidates for St Mary last night, said Holness introduced the idea in his 2016 manifesto when his party was vying for leadership of Jamaica and has not acted on the plan since then.
“I say to the prime minister, live your word. The situation [is] not looking so good. Term limits sound like a good idea in your case. Step aside and give somebody else a chance. The people want a Government of integrity. The people want a Government for the people. The people want a Government that can bring hope to this country,” declared the Opposition Leader.
Holness, while on the campaign trail in 2016, proposed limiting the tenure of prime minister to two consecutive terms, or 10 years for any individual. The legislative change was among others that were to be implemented within his first 100 days as prime minister.
If Holness is re-elected as prime minister after the upcoming general election, constitutionally due in 2025, it would see him serving in the role for three consecutive terms.
Other legislative changes that were to be implemented within Holness’ first 100 days as prime minister include fixed election date and the introduction of impeachment proceedings in Parliament.
