Multinational tech company Google Inc.’s popular maps feature changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’ for users in the United States on Monday (February 10), following an executive order issued by a newly inaugurated President Donald Trump.

The update follows an order signed by Trump on January 20, directing US government agencies to refer to the gulf as the ‘Gulf of America’ in official documents.

Google stated that the change is in tandem with the “longstanding practice” of following official government sources.

While the gulf’s name remains unchanged for users in Mexico, those in other parts of the world now see the label “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”

The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), managed by the US Department of the Interior, subsequently updated its records, prompting Google to follow suit.

Mexico has strongly opposed the renaming of the gulf, with President Claudia Sheinbaum urging Google to reconsider.

She argued that the United States has no legal right to alter the name, citing the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which limits a nation’s sovereign waters to 12 nautical miles from its coastline.

Following the name change, Trump declared February 9th ‘Gulf of America Day,’ calling on public officials and citizens to mark the occasion.

Trump’s executive order also included a directive to rename North America’s tallest mountain, Denali, to its former name, Mount McKinley, though Google has not yet implemented that change.
