Minister of Information, Dana Morris Dixon, announced that following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, the Government of Jamaica is undertaking repairs to the St Elizabeth Infirmary and other facilities.

“We are working really hard to look at our infrastructure that has been damaged as a result of Hurricane Melissa, and there are several infirmaries that have been damaged,” Morris Dixon said.

The minister advised while speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing on Wednesday that funds have been allocated to repair the St Elizabeth infirmary at a cost of $270 million.

“There is lots of damage to that infirmary, and so a lot of work will be done. Minister [Desmond] Mackenzie has noted that he is coordinating these efforts with several agencies, including the Municipal Corporation, NSWMA, SDC and the Poor Relief Department, and so we’re really looking forward to that,” Morris Dixon added.

The other infirmaries that need to be repaired, she noted, will cost is $1.2 billion.

“That’s a lot of money, but it’s very important that we do that,” Morris Dixon said.
