…Taking every necessary step so that the lowest income earner can afford their own home, says Holness

As he handed over six new houses under the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) in the constituencies of South West and North West St Ann, Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Friday (August 19), stressed that the Government’s prerogative is to ensure that the public and national interests are maintained through programmes such as the NSHP.
Holness, addressing one of two handover ceremonies, also pointed out that an objective of the Government is to provide the most affordable housing for every level income earner.
“We [the Government] must now focus on building $10-million, $80-million, and $6-million housing solutions, so that the market vendor, the domestic helper, the mechanic, your barber, the housekeeper can also get a NHT benefit,” the prime minister said.

He added that, while the Government seeks to ensure shelter for those in need, the objective is also to cover everyone in the society.
“Every action that this Government is taking is going towards the benefit of the poor, the needy and those who are truly deserving.”
Two of the six beneficiaries of a house under the NSHP were fire victims.
In the meantime, Holness expressed enthusiasm in delivering more houses in the coming weeks.
He stated: ”As the NSHP carries on, we are developing on the know-how and the skill and its increasing in capacity. The contractors are becoming more efficient. and hopefully, we will be able in another month or so to deliver maybe 10 per week. To increase the number of housing units that we are delivering.”
