The Government on Monday night (July 1), invoked the Disaster Risk Management Act (DRMA) as Hurricane Beryl barrels towards Jamaica.
Acting on the advice of the Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie, and the latest recommendation from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica regarding the imminent threat posed by Hurricane Beryl, the Government elevated the country’s disaster preparedness by moving from a hurricane watch to a hurricane warning.
Under the Disaster Risk Management Act, the government has enhanced powers to coordinate and execute emergency responses. Prime Minister Andrew Holness last enacted the DRMA during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Holness says, “The main priority of the administration at this time is the safety of the Jamaican people. By invoking the Disaster Risk Management Act, we are taking a proactive stance to prepare and protect our nation against any potential threats posed by Beryl.”
The government urges all citizens to remain vigilant, undertake necessary preparations, and cooperate fully with authorities during this period.

Regular updates and guidelines will be provided to ensure that everyone remains informed as Hurricane Beryl approaches.
“The machinery of Government has been mobilised, and we are ready to respond to any eventuality. We will weather this storm together,” he continued.
