Minister of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications Daryl Vaz provides an update on Hurricane Melissa recovery activities during a press briefing at Jamaica House on Thursday, November 11, 2025.

Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Daryl Vaz, has expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the government following the tragic plane crash in Florida on Monday that claimed the lives of a father and daughter en route to Jamaica on a hurricane relief mission.

“On behalf of the Government of Jamaica, I want to extend deepest condolences to the family,” Vaz said. “[They were] the father and daughter who tragically lost their lives in the plane crash yesterday in Florida. The aircraft was bound for Jamaica on a hurricane relief mission.”

Vaz identified one of the victims as Alexander Wurm, who he described as a man of great generosity and service.

Pastor Alexander Wurm and daughter Serena.

“Mr Alexander Wurm was known for his unwavering kindness and his lifelong dedication to serving others,” he said.

“He has been providing aid to Jamaica since the relief efforts began,” Vaz said.

The minister noted that Wurm was a resident of the Cayman Islands and well known within the Jamaican community there.

“He has always been one who gives and gives and gives. So again, I want to say our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends during this difficult time.”

Vaz confirmed that both Wurm and his daughter perished in the crash, emphasising that the flight was part of ongoing, legitimate relief efforts for communities affected by Hurricane Melissa.

“I understand based on confirmed reports that he and his daughter were tragically lost in this accident,” he said at a special press briefing on Hurricane Melissa recovery efforts on Tuesday. “Despite the established process, we have landed several relief flights and would have landed this one in good faith based on his mission.”

The minister said the government remains committed to continuing recovery efforts and expressed gratitude to all who have been assisting Jamaica in the wake of the storm.
