Prime Minister Andrew Holness is today (May 16) declaring that a newly constructed Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) will be prioritised under his administration.
Holness, in an announcement on X.com, formerly Twitter, alluded to the need to improve the provision of healthcare.
“More on the horizon for Public Health! This administration will start the process of constructing the new Kingston Public Hospital, the country’s first public health institution and the oldest hospital, established in 1776,” the prime minister tweeted.
This follows Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton’s announcement that the Government has given the go-ahead to develop a proposal for the construction of a new facility that preparatory work has begun for the construction of a new KPH.

Tufton revealed in Parliament that 2024 will be the year the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) will be conducting a comprehensive technical review of the infrastructure for both KPH and the neighbouring Victoria Jubilee Hospital and take on a comprehensive electrical rehabilitation of the facility at an estimated cost of J$300 million.
“We are upgrading your health services to serve you and your families better,” Holness added.
