With growing concerns surrounding the regulation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in society, government senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon says an AI Task Force is currently in the works which will be mandated to conduct research to aid in the development of a National AI policy.

Dr Morris Dixon made this announcement in the Upper House of Parliament on Friday (July 14) during her contribution to the State of the Nation Debate.

“The taskforce’s research will comprehensively analyse the current state of AI in Jamaica, including research and development activities, adoption levels, and challenges faced by various sectors of the economy,” she said.

The government senator said that the task force will also be mandated to identify opportunities to implement AI technologies, areas for economic growth and development likewise the potential social impacts.

“We must understand the risks and implement the necessary safeguards to allow us to respond to the rapid rate of technological change and to ultimately scale with confidence,” she said.
