In a move to fortify its communication apparatus and reduce the spread of misinformation, the Government has moved to increase support for communication departments and agencies.
Information Minister Robert Morgan said the strategic initiative was being done in recognition of the vital role that effective communication plays in safeguarding public understanding of Jamaica’s development.
“This Andrew Holness-led administration has accomplished unprecedented levels of development and social change for the Jamaican people. However, we live in a world where there are no more gatekeepers to information, and persons with ill-intent are able to manufacture lies to look like truths and to thwart factual data with colourful propaganda and misinformation,” said Morgan.
In recognition of this, the information minister said communications and public relations managers from all ministries, select departments, and agencies within the Government were trained in new methods of public relations and information sharing on September 28. Permanent secretaries and heads of agencies also received similar training.

Additionally, he shared that the Government launched a fact-checking website, www.factcheckja.com, that positions the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) as a guardian against misinformation and disinformation.
“The implementation of improvements identified through these consultations will ensure that the Government of Jamaica can create a robust, responsive, and innovative communication infrastructure, fostering transparency, and public engagement,” explained Morgan.
In the ongoing political arena, accusations fly as both the Government and the Opposition traded blame, each alleging the other of disseminating false information to sway public opinion.
The current dispute between the Government and the Opposition hinges on the assessment of economic growth and development in Jamaica, as the Opposition contends there has been no development while the Government asserts that the country has made significant progress.
The debate comes as the country prepares for the upcoming local government election.
