Title sponsor of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Boys and Girls Athletic Championships (Champs), GraceKennedy (GK) has announced its investment will exceed J$185 million up from $178m and along with two scholarships in honour of former CEO Don Wehby.

ISSA will receive $104m in cash, Group’s Grace Foods, Western Union and First Global brands will also invest an additional $81m on the execution of the Champs set for March 25-29.

Wehby, who actually won gold in the Class Three 100m hurdles in 1978 for St George’s College, will see GraceKennedy, which is celebrating its 103^rd anniversary, put up $103,000 to anyone who breaks the Class Three 100m hurdles record at Champs.

New Group CEO of GraceKennedy, Frank James, while speaking at Champs launch on Wednesday, said this substantial investment underscores their belief in the power of sports to transform lives and communities.

“It’s a strategic investment in the future of Jamaica, fostering athletic excellence and building a stronger nation through the values instilled in these young athletes,” said James.

“This year’s Championships carries special significance for GK, as the Group will take the opportunity to honour recently retired Group CEO Don Wehby at the event. A steadfast supporter of Champs, Don Wehby has been instrumental in advancing youth development through sports. In recognition of his impact, GK is introducing the Don Wehby Sportsmanship Award.

“This award, valued at J$250,000, celebrates the values of sportsmanship that he passionately upholds, and which is so integral to Champs. It will be presented annually to the school of the most deserving male or female athlete, as determined in collaboration with ISSA,” James explained.

Wehby, who also captured silver in both the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles in 1982, actually gained a Cable and Wireless academic scholarship to the UWI.

Now, to further celebrate Wehby’s impact on youth development, it was announced that the GraceKennedy Foundation will be awarding a new scholarship in his name. The scholarship, valued at J$500,000, will be presented annually to a student who demonstrates strong academic performance and active participation in sports.
