A total of 59 new vehicles have been handed over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, as part of the Ministry of National Security’s Rebuild, Overhaul and Construct (ROC) Project.
The vehicles are to boost the overall fleet of vehicles and capacity of police officers to respond to incidents and improve overall service delivery to Jamaicans. The ROC project aims to bring awareness to the public as the National Security Ministry is rebuilding, renovating and retrofitting police stations islandwide.
The ministry’s transformational agenda is to Rebuild, Overhaul and Construct more than 200 police facilities. The objective of Project ROC is to convert all police stations into modern, citizen-friendly workspaces, provide officers with a comfortable environment conducive for work, while creating the ambience for citizens to willingly and comfortably engage the police.
Jamaicans commenting
There has been mixed reaction by Facebook users to the news of the new vehicles for the police force.
Joyce Blair posted: “Great news. Trust this will alleviate the problems faced by police to connect with citizens as a result of immobility. Trust these and other vehicles will be properly maintained.”
Another comment from Salome Paul read: “I can’t understand so many vehicles go to the police force on a frequent basis and yet so often you hear of rural stations with only one or two vehicles. I hope some of these vehicles go to those stations to assist in boosting their response time in those areas.”
Some of the sarcastic remarks came from Sheldon Green, who wrote: “It’s a good look but it won’t be long before the amateur police drivers right em off like they always do due to crashes and lack of service. Then they say ‘we don’t have vehicles to respond’ when you call them.”
Another such comment came from Sherida Brown, who said: “Thats all yall using our taxpayers down the drain and no improvement but more corruption. Yall need to fix the country and calm crime.”
