The CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) to Grenada’s June 23 general elections has applauded the conduct of the polls, noting the “atmosphere of peace and composure”.
The nine-member Mission, led by John Jarvis of Antigua and Barbuda, held pre-election day engagements with major stakeholders and observed polling day activities, following which it issued a preliminary statement.
In its statement, the observation mission, through Jarvis, said there was an overwhelming response at the opening of the polls, as well as a constant flow of voting throughout the day.
“The spirit of inclusivity was a welcomed highlight of the process.”

“The CEOM despatched four teams of observers across the country, in 12 of the 15 constituencies, including a two-member team sent to the constituency of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. It was witnessed that different approaches were employed to the voting process and the counting of the ballots. However, these remained in compliance with the overarching guidelines for the electoral process,” Jarvis stated.
“The spirit of inclusivity was a welcomed highlight of the process. Commendable features were the presence of ramps at several polling stations and the fact that the majority of stations visited were located at the ground level to facilitate the movement of differently-abled persons.”
Jarvis said it valued the opportunity to contribute to the democratic process in Grenada and appreciated the support and cooperation received throughout.

“We congratulate the voters, electoral officials and all Election Day workers in their various roles for their discipline and commitment to advance the democratic process in Grenada.”
The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the general elections after nine of the 15 seats were preliminarily declared in its favour.
The remaining seats went to the New National Party (NNP) of Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell.
Dickon Mitchell, the 44-year-old NDC leader, who took charge of the opposition party in October last year was appointed the country’s new prime minister on June 24.
