As we roll into the rainy season, it is important to heighten awareness of the various health conditions that can be significantly exacerbated by the change in weather; posing a serious challenge for those affected.

Many people find themselves facing more than just wet clothes and muddy shoes during the wet season; pain and discomfort are two main culprits due to some underlying health issues.

So let us dive into what those rain-affected health conditions are.

Arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

One of the most common complaints during rainy weather comes from individuals suffering from arthritis. Similarly, osteoarthritis, weather changes can affect pain levels and stiffness in people with rheumatoid arthritis. This discomfort is often attributed to changes in barometric pressure (Earth’s atmospheric pressure), which can cause tissues to expand and put additional pressure on joints.

Asthma and allergies

Asthma and allergy sufferers also find rainy weather annoying and challenging.

Rain can encourage the growth of mould and release pollen from wet ground, both of which are known triggers for asthma and allergy symptoms. The increased humidity can also make it harder to breathe for those with respiratory conditions, leading to more frequent use of inhalers and other medications.

Respiratory infections

Common colds and influenza infections tend to spike during the rainy season.

The wet weather often drives people indoors, where they are closer to others, facilitating the spread of viruses. Also, the damp environment can create breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses, further increasing the risk of infections.

Seasonal affective disorder

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs at certain times of the year and is particularly sensitive to changes in light and weather, making rainy seasons a difficult time for those affected. Reduced sunlight and gloomy weather can worsen symptoms of SAD.

Migraine and headaches

Some people experience more frequent or severe headaches and migraines due to changes in atmospheric pressure associated with rain.

Fibromyalgia

Patients with fibromyalgia often report that cold, damp weather worsens their pain and fatigue.

People with fibromyalgia often report that cold, damp weather exacerbates their pain and fatigue. This chronic condition, characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in localized areas, can become more challenging to manage during rainy periods.

In general, weather changes involving increased humidity and lower barometric pressure can affect various conditions differently depending on the individual. Rainy season necessitates extra precautions for health conditions, including staying warm and dry, using dehumidifiers indoors, and managing allergen exposure.
