The first case of monkeypox in Guyana is a 57-year-old male public transportation driver confirmed Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony in a recording earlier this afternoon (August 22).
The man is currently in isolation at the country’s Infectious Diseases Hospital in the country’s capital, Georgetown.
The minister said it was suspected that the man was infected over the weekend.
The man has no recent travel history outside of Guyana and was already at an advanced stage when he arrived at the hospital and is expected to recover within the next 14 days.
“We had been looking at what had been happening in the world and [adopting] those measures and guidelines so that when recording our case, we can take those measures and guidelines and run with them,” said Anthony.
