Guyana is preparing to in-source the multi-billion oil tanker cleaning operations needed for its oil industry.

These services are usually carried out by firms in Trinidad and Tobago, which receives billions of dollars each year to provide all Marine Support Vessel (MSV) tank cleaning services for Guyana’s growing oil market. International oil giant, ExxonMobil, which is the entity drawing oil in Guyana and has been contracting these T&T firms to carry out the service, is currently in the process of awarding the work to its Guyana subsidiary, Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL).

ExxonMobil’s has advised that a tender is now out in Guyana to provide tank cleaning services locally using technologies that minimise the generation of waste. The cleaning process employed by T&T is manual and generates large volumes of wash water and solids with the material recovered from tank cleaning services evaluated for reuse at Liquid Mud Plants (LMPs).

New strategy for LMP operations in Guyana

The tank cleaning waste streams that are unable to be reclaimed are evaluated for treatment. ExxonMobil has pointed to the need for MSV tank cleaning services in Guyana to being part of the strategy for LMP operations in Guyana for the future.

ExxonMobil has explained that the operation of three LMPs in Georgetown to support offshore operations efficiently requires co-located tank cleaning services noting that the start-up for MSV tank cleaning capabilities in Guyana was slated to get off the ground late last year. The US-based international oil giant has disclosed that the tank cleaning system selected for Guyana includes a solids removal system and wash-water reuse technology.

ExxonMobil further explains that solids removal system and water reuse technology selected will reduce the waste generated from tank cleaning.
