Award-winning, Jamaican artiste and selector Charly Black, celebrates his birthday today! The artiste turns 43 on this, his special day.

Charly Black was born Desmond Mendez on April 6, 1980, in Rio Bueno Trelawny. At the tender age of five he started his journey into the music industry by entering singing competitions.

It was under his original name, Tony Mentol, that the artiste made his recorded debut with the single, Woman It’s You, in 2004.

The singjay eventually switched aliases to Charly Black and recorded a string of cuts for labels like Coppershot, M Bass, and VP, the last of which issued his breakout hit Buddy Buddy in 2008.

A few years down the line the reggae-dancehall entertainer and songwriter received a major breakthrough with the 2015 single Gyal You A Party Animal which skyrocketed his following on the international scene.

The hit single landed the artiste on the popular Wendy Williams show as well as several stages across South America and other Spanish-speaking countries, where his following has reached soaring numbers.

Charly Black went on to release many more hit singles. Today, the artiste performs for hundreds of thousands of people around the world – spreading Jamaican the culture and the music.

Earlier this year the Trelawny native dropped his brand-new album titled No Excuses. The 15-track album, which was released on February 24, highlights the artiste’s growth over the years.
