Governor of Hawaii Josh Green has proclaimed February 14 to be ‘One Love Day’ in Hawaii to honour the late Bob Marley’s incredible musical legacy and his 80th birthday.

Governor Green signed the proclamation surrounded by Marley’s sons, Julian and Ky-Mani, and other members of the Marley ‘ohana, in the hope that it will encourage all residents and visitors to reflect on the values of love, unity and peace that Marley’s music embodies — and which align perfectly with Hawai‘i’s Aloha Spirit.

Hawaii has embraced the Jamaican music genre so deeply that local musicians, in solidarity with the messages Bob Marley shared — and with the experiences of the Jamaican people — created a sub-genre of Hawaiian music known as “Ja-waiian” decades ago, which is still going strong.

On February 6, 2025, the world celebrated what would have been Bob Marley’s 80th birthday. The Hawaiian government, in its observation of this milestone, honoured the late Jamaican artiste’s contributions to the world of music and his enduring impact on the global community.

His legacy inspired and continues to inspire generations worldwide to stand up for equality, embrace diversity and spread kindness with our everyday actions.
