HBO’s television adaption of popular, post-apocalyptic video game The Last of Us on Monday (September 26) released its first official trailer.

Just like the original game, created by Naughty Dog video game company for the Sony PlayStation, The Last of Us series follows a hardened survivor named Joel, played by Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal, as he journeys across a United States decimated by a deadly disease that turns people into zombie-like monsters called clickers.

Along the way, he travels with a young girl named Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, who is crucial to finding a cure. The game is highly acclaimed due to the strength of its story, portrayals of trauma and representation of women and members of the LGBT community.

Among fans of the game, September 26 is known as Outbreak Day due to it being the day the virus first started spreading in the in-game lore.

Neil Druckmann, co-president of video game studio Naughty Dog, serves as co-creator, executive producer alongside Craig Mazin, the Emmy-winning creator of Chernobyl.

Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Rose Lam are executive producers. Kantemir Balagov, Jasmila Žbanić, Ali Abbasi, Peter Hoar, Jeremy Webb and Liza Johnson are directors. The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint and Naughty Dog.

The series is set to premiere in 2023.
