The tropical climate of Jamaica makes it ideal for a plethora of fruits to thrive on the island. These include fruits such as the orange, guinep, papaya and banana, which can be found across the island.
Not only are these fruits quite tasty, but they also provide a number of health benefits. This, is the first in the series of health benefits that Jamaica-found fruits are able to provide, and for today, the focus is on the Otaheite apple.
Also known as Malay Rose apple, Coco Plum and Mountain apple, the bright red pear-resembling fruit is botanically referred to as Syzgium malaccense.
Originating in Malaysia, the Otaheite apple was brought to Jamaica in by English officer in the Royal Navy, Captain Bligh William. Containing 91 per cent of water, the fruit can sometimes turn from a rosy red colour, to one resembling a purple hue.

Riboflavin, carotenoids, Vitamin A and Vitamin C and are top components found in the Otaheite apple which help to improve one’s eyesight.
Improves Immune System
Potent in Vitamin A and Vitamin C, the Otaheite apple is able to help the body fight against diseases. The fruit which contains carotene, a terpenoid hydrocarbon found in red and orange pigmented plants, also tend to lead to healthier skin and mucous membrane.
Carotene also contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that can reduce acne.
Provides Energy
Thiamine, a Vitamin B1 substance that the body isn’t able to produce on its own, is contained in the fruit. Required for a healthy nervous system, thiamine aids in turning food into energy.
Powerful Antioxidant
Antioxidants can be described as substances that protect the body against damage caused by free radicals, which if allowed to fester, can result in the formation of cancer, cataract and heart disease.
Vitamin C, which is found in the Otaheite apple, is a powerful antioxidant containing flavonols, phenolic compounds, sesquiterpenes, and carotenoids.

Fiber is very important when it comes on to digestion. The Otaheite apple which is rich in fiber, is able to help normalise bowel movement. The fiber creates a bulkier stool, which is easier to pass.
