Jamaica is home to a myriad of delicious and tasty fruits. Though many of the fruits did not originate here, over the years they have been able to thrive in the island’s tropical climate and have become delicacies here. Some of these fruits include guinep, ackee, banana and papaya.
These fruits are not only tasty and enjoyed by many Jamaicans, but they have several health benefits.
In Our Today‘s series on the health benefits provided by Jamaica-found fruits, the focus is now on the star apple.
Believed to be native to the West Indies, star apples are grown in South East Asia as well as Hawaii and parts of Florida.
Also known as the star plum, cainito or tar apple, this fruit comes from a fast-growing tree that can reach up to 20 metres.
Health Benefits

Potassium has been known to reduce one’s high blood pressure which in turn reduces one’s risk of stroke.
Potassium, which is found in star apples, is able to encourage a healthy nervous system and helps to regulate fluid levels in the body, which can prevent water retention.
