Among them are Information Commissioner Celia Barclay (centre) and attorney at law and founder of Design Privacy Chukwuemeka Cameron (right).

Information Comissioner Celia Barclay is extending assistance to data protection officers (DPOs) as they navigate understanding their roles within the context of the Data Protection Act, 2020.

The keynote speaker at the launch of the Data Protection Officer Community held at The Summit in New Kingston on Thursday, May 9, Barclay encouraged DPOs to work as a collective and collaboratively in recognition of the need for support.

“When considering purpose, I ask that you think beyond yourself because while you seek to build yourself as a DPO and offer your services, you must recognize that you are not alone in this endeavor. Therefore, you will require support in various ways, which is why I am glad for initiatives like the Open DPO community,” she said.

The DPO Community is the brainchild of attorney and founder of Design Privacy Chukwuemeka Cameron. The company established the initiative to will serve as a hub for DPOs from various sectors to connect, share best practices, and enhance their expertise.

The community aims to create a network of support and collaboration for its members, offering then resources and opportunities to grow professionally.

According to Cameron, “The establishment of the DPO Community marks a crucial step towards promoting higher standards of data protection.”

As such, the organisation will have regular meetings and networking events both online and in person to discuss challenges, strategies, and innovations in data protection.

It will also provide access to exclusive data protection resources; for example, self-register, Data Protection Foundation Course Gap Analysis and professional development programmes.

“We are committed to supporting data protection officers in their crucial roles and look forward to seeing the community drive positive change across industries,” Cameron stated.
