High school gridiron recap: Second week delivers thrills and spills

The Secondary School Gridiron League (SSGL) Flag Football competition continued to captivate fans in the second week the spring season, with six elite schools clashing in a frenzy of flags, touchdowns and thrilling plays. 

The electric atmosphere was palpable as Newell High School and May Day High School played host to the week’s games, showcasing the best of Jamaican flag football.

Newell High School’s home turf was abuzz as they welcomed New Forrest High School and STETHS for a thrilling triple header.

The visiting team New Forrest High School girls’ team made a statement with a crushing 20 – 0 victory over Newell High School, while their male counterparts delivered a dominating performance, outscoring New Forrest High School 20-2 and STETHS 20-0.

Meanwhile, May Day High School’s home games were just as electrifying, with the Mona High School girls’ team edging out May Day High School 18-13 in a nail-biting contest. The May Day High School boys’ team, however, stole the show with an impressive 26-8 win over Munro College and a hard-fought 18-14 victory over Mona High School.

Mona girls: Carina Dawkins (WR), four touchdowns, one interception; Shanaoye McGregor (QB), 45 yards passing, 12 defensive tackles (flag pulls).

Mona boys: Jayden Gordon (QB), four passing touchdowns, 120 yards passing, one interception; Toyan Taffe (WR), two touchdown receptions, eight catches, 80 yards; Matthew Cardoza (WR), one touchdown reception, one interception;

New Forrest boys: Kennardo Thompson, sack for safety; Jahmarcus Mulzac, one touchdown.

The road ahead

With the competition heating up, fans can expect even more thrilling matches in the weeks to come. The next round of games kick off on February 28, as tournament hosts STETHS, Newell, and May Day, while the New Forrest plays host to a triple-header against Mona and Munro.
