Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Senator Aubyn Hill, says the Government remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding high-speed broadband access islandwide.

In an address delivered by Permanent Secretary, Sancia Bennett Templer, during the Global Digital Services of Jamaica Breakfast Forum at the Grand-A-View Restaurant and Events Place in Montego Bay, St James, on Thursday, November 21, Hill said the initiative is also pivotal to the Government’s digital transformation agenda.

“This is about more than just infrastructure. It is about bridging divides, fostering innovation and positioning Jamaica as a competitive player in the global economy. The Government recognises that high-speed broadband can open doors to education and spur further economic growth,” the minister said.

“In that regard, the Government has already installed high-speed public access Wi-Fi in 189 communities across Jamaica, particularly in rural areas and underserved communities, to ensure that they have access and are no longer left behind. Reliable high-speed internet access empowers businesses to innovate, adapt to e-commerce platforms and engage in global value chains,” he added.

Senator Hill emphasised that seamless connectivity is essential for the Global Digital Services sector, to increase productivity and efficiency, deliver world-class services and maintain global competitiveness.

The forum was held under the theme: ‘Beyond the Desk – Building Foundation for Productivity’.
