As the Yuletide season approaches, the joy of the holiday, the spirit of gift-giving, and the excitement of family gatherings fill the air.

Amidst the merriment of the season, the Jamaica Constabulary Force is encouraging people to be mindful of criminals.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force has outlined several tips and practices that can be utilized to
curb the onset of accidents, scams and break-ins throughout this period, ultimately securing a safe
and Merry Christmas.

At home

  • Secure all entrances to your home. Install burglar-proofing systems and padlock all doors.
  • If possible, invest in a home security system.
  • Keep travel plans offline. If you are planning to travel during the holiday season, be sure
  • to keep your travel plans off your social media networks.
  • Don’t use lit candles as tree decorations. Electric candles are safer options, and with
  • advancements in energy technology; they are also efficient alternatives.
  • Don’t overload circuits, extension cords, or electrical sockets. Overloading circuits could
  • cause a fire.

Whilst shopping

  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings
  • Stay alert: In crowded areas like markets, malls and stores, always stay aware of your
  • surroundings. Keep an eye on your personal belongings and beware of pickpockets.
  • Secure your bags: Use a crossbody bag or a money belt that is harder to snatch. If you
  • Carry a purse, keep it close to your body, and zip it securely.
  • Check your environment: Before entering parking lots or garages, be sure they are well-lit
  • and populated with people. Avoid empty or poorly lit areas when walking to and from
  • your car.

Avoid Carrying Large Amounts of Cash

  • Use cards or mobile payments: Credit and debit cards, as well as mobile payment methods
like mobile banking and are safer than carrying large amounts of cash. This reduces the
    risk of theft.
  • If you must carry cash, only bring the amount you need for the day and split it between
different pockets or compartments. This way, if your wallet is lost or stolen, you’ll still
    have access to some funds.

Limit Distractions

  • Avoid using your phone while shopping: Texting, checking social media, or taking calls
  • while shopping can make you an easy target for theft. Keep your phone in your bag or pocket while you walk.
  • Stay focused: Keep your attention on what you’re doing rather than getting distracted by
  • excessive chatting or browsing on your phone.

Limit the Exposure of Expensive Items

  • Be discreet with valuables. Don’t display expensive jewellery, gadgets, or large sums of
money while shopping. If possible, leave high-value items at home or secure them in your
    car’s trunk.
  • Dress simply: Wearing flashy clothes or accessories can make you a target for
    opportunistic thieves.
