Prime Minister Andrew Holness has paid tribute to late business leader Dr Marshall Hall, who died this morning (November 22).

In a statement, Holness said: “Jamaica has lost one of its foremost academic thinkers and business leader, Dr. the Honourable Marshall McGowan Hall.

“I express my deepest sympathy to his family, friends, loved ones and colleagues in both the business and academic fields.

“Dr Hall was Director of the immensely successful Jamaica Producers Group Limited for 40 years and Managing Director for 27 years.

“Dr Hall was an economist who served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies, as well as Head of the Department of Management Studies. Among other significant leadership roles at UWI, Dr Hall was a widely published writer in the areas of micro and institutional economics.

“Over a prolific career, Dr Hall served in numerous other capacities, including as Chairman and CEO of the Jamaica Public Service, Chairman of the Jamaica Development Bank, Chairman of the National Commercial Bank and Mutual Life, and Chairman of the Caribbean Policy and Research Institute, among other distinguished roles.

“During his distinguished career at the JP Group, he pioneered the large-scale modernisation of banana production in Jamaica which sustained the local industry and boosted national employment and export.

“Dr Hall has made an incalculable contribution to national development and Jamaica will continue to benefit from his legacy for generations to come.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
