Prime Minister Andrew Holness recently announced that approximately 290,912 Jamaicans are set to benefit from the government’s reverse income tax credit following payments this week.

Addressing supporters at the Jamaica Labour Party’s 81st Annual Conference on Sunday, November 24, Holness highlighted that the initiative has provided a one-off payment of J$20,000 to individuals earning under J$3 million annually.

Holness emphasised that this form of direct financial assistance is unprecedented in Jamaica’s history, asking, “When has that ever happened in the history of Jamaica?”

The reverse income tax credit is part of the government’s broader efforts to support vulnerable Jamaicans.

The prime minister also pointed out that there are still some individuals who have not been included in the government’s CARE programme, including those who are not registered with PATH, the social pension system, or the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).

To address this gap, Holness revealed that in February 2025, Jamaicans aged 18 and over who fall into these categories will be eligible for a JMD $20,000 grant. However, these individuals will need to undergo a needs assessment to qualify for the assistance.
